This is the best homemade holiday recipe that is well worth the extra work because it elevates the flavor of any of your favorite casseroles! Better than the store-bought version, our Copycat French’s Fried Onions From Scratch will leave your friends and family wondering what you did differently this year to improve the green bean casserole so much!

Ingredients Required:

All of the ingredients are really basic.

 Onions:

We like these best served with tiny yellow onions, although white onions would work just as well.

Flour:

While gluten-free flour is an option, we utilize all-purpose flour.

Buttermilk:

Alternatively, if buttermilk isn’t readily available, you can prepare a homemade version using simply whole milk and lemons.

Plant-Based Oil:

for deep-frying. Canola oil would also function; all you need is a high smoke point, neutral-flavored oil.

Add the salt and pepper.

Detailed Instructions:

These guys require very little preparation.

Step1:

Slice your onions very thinly to prepare them. Slice those huge onions if you have them.

Step2:

Soak the onions in buttermilk (or make your own in five minutes) or both. Give them time to soak—at least ten minutes, but preferably thirty.

Step3:

As you heat your oil, coat your onions with a mixture of flour, salt, and pepper.

Step4:

Deep-fry in oil until crispy!

“From Scratch Onion Recipe: Perfect for the Holidays”

And finished! This recipe yields an impressive 15 ounces of onions! That even takes into consideration the unavoidably overdone hot oil sacrifices. That is more than twice as much as what you would get from a larger French’s container, less the dextrose. Given the green beans and mushrooms, can you guess what I’ll be cooking with these tiny, crispy morsels of perfection? A hint: it contains some of my homemade cream of mushroom soup! The recipe is available here!

FAQs:

Which variety of onions should I use?

We use small yellows, but white would also work. There’s no way Red will work for this one.

Can I prepare them ahead of time?

Yes, it certainly can! After allowing them to cool fully, store them for up to three days in an airtight container. They will re-crisp in the oven if you plan to add them to your favorite casserole. If you want them crispier for snacking or adding them to something, bake them for 5 minutes at 375 degrees in the oven.

What is the yield of this recipe?

This amounts to roughly 15 ounces, which is equivalent to two large containers of French’s Fried Onions.

Could I substitute gluten for these?

Yes! Additionally, Bob’s Red Mill gluten-free flour can be used in this recipe.

Is it possible to make these vegan?

Indeed! Some readers have reported that using 2 1/2 tablespoons of vinegar and plant-based milk makes this recipe work.

Have fun! As usual, I would love to know what you think if you try this recipe or any of my others! You can contact me via email, Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest, or by leaving a comment below!
